This summer, the Morenci Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is expanding its event lineup with Summer Saturdays, a monthly series designed to bring people together, support local businesses, and offer family-friendly activities in downtown Morenci. The events will take place once a month from June through August, each featuring a unique theme, live music, and activities for all ages.
The first event, “Horsin’ Around,” will take place on Saturday, June 7. The day will begin with the Run for the Roses 5K at 9:00 a.m. with check-in starting at 8:00 a.m. at the municipal parking lot on the corner of Mill and Locust Streets. Registration is $35, and those who sign up by May 11 will receive a free event t-shirt. Proceeds will benefit the Morenci Middle and High School cross country programs to help refurbish their course. From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., behind North Street Pub, there will be free pony rides for kids and lawn games for all ages. A “kerplunk” raffle will offer chances to win prizes, and horseshoes will be set up for casual play in the grassy lot on North Street. At 6:48 p.m., the Bellmont Stakes race will be broadcast live at the Rex Theatre, with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. and free popcorn for all guests. The evening will wrap up with outdoor musical entertainment starting at 7:30 p.m. behind North Street Pub, with food available for purchase from the Fade to Black BBQ food truck.
All activities will take place within the Morenci Social District, where guests can enjoy drinks from participating establishments while visiting downtown.
This new event series is made possible by generous sponsorship support from more than a dozen local businesses and organizations. These partnerships help the DDA offer high-quality entertainment while supporting long-term economic vitality downtown.
“The DDA has really focused on growing what we offer downtown, and Summer Saturdays are the next step in that effort,” said Brad Frederick, Chair of the DDA Events Committee. “These events are a way to support our businesses, bring new energy to Morenci, and give the community something to look forward to. We are excited to keep building on this momentum and welcome anyone who wants to help us make it happen.”
Future Summer Saturdays will feature different themes each month, with more details for July and August events to be announced soon.
