Classroom teaching with arborist and Tree City flag at City Hall

The City of Morenci is proud to share that we have once again been recognized as a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation. After a brief lapse, Morenci regained its designation in 2025 and is now celebrating its 16th year in the program, during the 50th anniversary of Tree City USA nationwide.

To qualify for Tree City USA recognition, communities must meet four core standards: maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, invest at least $2 per capita in urban forestry, and participate in an annual Arbor Day celebration. Morenci is one of 122 Michigan communities honored for this work.

As part of this year’s Arbor Day celebration, Christa Davis from the Morenci Department of Public Works and Steve Lane, the City’s forestry consultant, visited fifth grade classrooms at Morenci Area Schools to teach students about the many benefits trees provide. Students learned how trees improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff, provide shade, save energy, and create healthier, more beautiful neighborhoods.

“Being recognized again as a Tree City USA is an honor that many in our community have worked hard to achieve,” said Mayor Tracy Schell. “Our trees contribute not only to the beauty of our community, but also to overall environmental health. We’re proud of the newly adopted Forestry Management Plan and are grateful to everyone who worked so hard to make it happen.”

By investing in our trees today, we are helping create a healthier, stronger, and more vibrant Morenci for future generations.
