What a wonderful way to wrap up March is Reading Month!

Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming Michigan author Mary D. Martinez to our school. She shared parts of her book, Adventures Abroad with the McComas Siblings, and inspired our students with an important message about the power of strong core values and working hard to achieve your goals.

Our students were engaged, curious, and excited to hear directly from a real author. What an unforgettable experience! Thank you, Ms. Martinez, for encouraging a love of reading and reminding us all to dream big.

📚✨ Mystery Reader Surprise! ✨📚

Our students had a fun surprise during Mystery Reader when they discovered the reader was our very own first-grade teacher, Ms. Hoffman, and a published author!

Ms. Hoffman shared her children’s book “I Won’t Eat Broccoli! I Won’t, I Won’t!” with students, and they loved hearing the story read by the author herself. We are so proud of Ms. Hoffman and excited to celebrate this wonderful accomplishment within our Morenci Elementary family. 💙🤍

Her book is available on Amazon if you’d like to grab a copy for your family!

🍀 If I Found a Pot of Gold… 🍀
Our DK students had some fun dreaming about what they would do if they found a pot of gold! Their ideas were creative, thoughtful, and a little adventurous!

Some of their plans included:
✨ Putting it in a piggy bank
✨ Giving it to their mom
✨ Buying a box of race cars
✨ Hiding it in a cave
✨ Putting it by a tree
✨ Buying supplies to build a treehouse
✨ Keeping it in their pocket
✨ Even getting on a plane! ✈️

We love seeing our young Bulldogs use their imaginations and share their ideas. Who knows… maybe they’ll find that pot of gold someday! 🌈💰

Morenci Area Schools’ 5th-grade Science Olympiad team captured 1st place overall out of 12 schools at the Tri-County Science Olympiad, showcasing their knowledge, creativity, and engineering skills.

Students began preparing in January, practicing a couple of days a week after school. Morenci competitors placed in seven of the eight events, earning multiple top finishes.

Top results included 1st place in Ping Pong Propulsion (Honor Erskin and Owen Apger), where students designed a device to launch ping pong balls at a target; 1st place in Reach for the Sky (Owen Apger and Madelyn Timberman), a solar system knowledge competition; and 1st place in Michigan Spiders (Junior Bussell and Paisley McMunn). Additional placements included 3rd in Ologies (Madelyn Timberman and Paisley McMunn) and 5th-place finishes in Tower Challenge (Honor Erskin and Audrey Klinger), Load Masters (Jaxson Johnson and Ben Schell), and Nerves Do What (Ben Schell and Paisley McMunn).

Coach Andi Rorick praised the team’s dedication and teamwork throughout the season.
“Our motto was, ‘Work hard, play hard,’ and the students truly lived that out. Seeing the upper elementary cheering as they brought home the trophy was an unforgettable moment.”

Morenci’s younger teams also had strong showings. The 3rd-grade team placed 1st in Wing Wonders (Cassius Craig and Ezri Hall), while the 4th-grade team earned several top finishes, including 4th-place in Tower Tycoon (Amelia Gehring and Brayden Scivoletto).

Morenci Area Schools also thanked coaches Taylor Curtis, Jennifer Rohde, and Andi Rorick, along with volunteer Rebecca Cox, whose support helped guide the students to success.

Our 5th-grade STEAM class was inspired by our read-aloud, Ada’s Violin—the true story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay! 🎻♻️
Students are now designing and building their own violin prototypes, putting their creativity and engineering skills to work.

A BIG thank you to the Lenawee County Education Foundation for helping us add new Chomp Saws to our STEAM room—another great tool for our Bulldogs to create and explore as they Unleash Their Potential. 💙🐶

Our 1st graders put their thinking caps on for the “Engineer a Snow Scoop” Challenge! Students designed their own tools to scoop “snow,” tested their creations, made improvements, and tried again—just like real engineers!

Hands-on learning like this builds creativity, problem-solving, and resilience while our young Bulldogs learn to Unleash Their Potential. 💙🐶

Our 5th-grade students recently dove into a hands-on science experience by dissecting owl pellets after reading There’s an Owl in the Shower by Jean Craighead George.

Students carefully examined and identified the bones found inside the pellets, applying what they learned through reading to real-world scientific investigation. It was an engaging way to connect literacy and science while building critical thinking skills.

A special thank you to Loretta Cox for coming in and leading this interactive dissection experience for our students. We appreciate your time and expertise!

🐾📚 On February 4th, our elementary students participated in Global Play Day, stepping outside of traditional classroom routines to explore creativity, imagination, and hands-on learning.

Students built, designed, collaborated, and problem-solved through open-ended play activities that encouraged innovation and teamwork. Whether constructing with blocks, creating games, or working together on imaginative challenges, our young Bulldogs were developing critical thinking, communication skills, and resilience in a fun and engaging environment.

At Morenci Area Schools, we know that creativity fuels learning. Experiences like Global Play Day remind us that play is powerful—and an important part of academic growth.
